Historic Core is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the City of Los Angeles, with a history dating back to the early 1900s. In 2018, as part of a design team, I helped create a visual identity for the neighborhood’s Business Improvement District — one meant to capture the sense of revival happening across the area.
Design Strategy
Build a brand identity that could carry across a wide range of public and civic touchpoints: from transit ads to storefront wraps, while capturing the neighborhood’s balance of historic character and contemporary renewal.
Consept
“What’s Old is New” — a visual identity built around the tension between the neighborhood’s early-1900s architectural history and its ongoing revival, using portrait-driven imagery and bold typography to root the brand in the people who make up the district today.
Design Approach
+ Designed as part of a team, contributing to the identity system carried across signage, transit advertising, and public installations
+ Applied the brand to real-world civic touchpoints: bus wraps, murals ideas, skateboard decks, and promotional collateral
+ Balanced historic character with a contemporary, street-level visual language suited to the neighborhood’s day-to-day life
